Wee: Work towards a better future for the people and nation

KOTA KINABALU: Stop politicking and focus on fulfilling duties towards the people, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said it is time for the Federal Government to stop all forms of politicking and work towards a better future for the people and the nation.

Let’s fulfil all election promises made to the voters, he added.

“There are issues like the rising cost of living, national policies include the proposed reimplementation of the goods and services tax as well as luxury tax, drawing investors and many more to attend to.

“The people do not want any more nonsense from the government, but proper direction and action to bring better days ahead for them, economically and socially,” Dr Wee said when officiating Sabah MCA’s annual general meeting here yesterday.

On the state’s affairs, he said more effort to attract investors and to solve the ongoing problems faced by the people is needed.

“We do not want any extremist ideologies but instead we need to move forward and address the concerns of the people,” added the Ayer Hitam MP.

On the luxury tax, Dr Wee said the Federal Government was supposed to provide details of its implementation in June but nothing had come up as of August.

“You want to implement this by next year, you have to reveal the details, where are the details?” he said.

He said traders need time to sort to prepare for when the luxury tax is imposed. He called for the government to make a swift decision on the matter.

In his speech earlier, Dr Wee urged party members in the state to start recruiting young members and to reach out to young voters.

“If you do not do it within a year or so, there is no chance of MCA getting back on its feet when the elections are called.

“Our new voters are the ones aged between 18 and 25, get to work, go recruit them. I give you a target of 500, if you can get up to a thousand new members by this year, then it is better,” he said.

Dr Wee noted that there are a number of bright and promising young members in the party. It would do MCA good if such new recruits are moulded as leaders, he added.

He said the senior and more experienced members, no doubts, are the gems and backbone of the party as they provide knowledge and guidance but the young ones are the future.
