Yorke: Legends squad a class above the current Red Devils

PETALING JAYA: Former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke says the current English Premier League team would be no match for the legends squad.

The legend’s team, who will be taking on the Liverpool Reds in an exhibition match on Saturday at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, said the seniors will have no issue if they are hypothetically pitted against the current United squad.

“They would probably have more legs than us, and that’s about it.

“In terms of playing the game, I’m sure that we are much better players than them,” said Yorke at a press conference at the Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel and Convention Centre for the upcoming match yesterday.

The Battle of the Reds clash between the Liverpool and United legends this weekend is set to bring back nostalgic memories for Malaysian football fans.

The Manchester Reds line-up features Yorke as the manager for David May, Wes Brown, Clayton Blackmore, Keith Gillespie, Ben Thornley, Eric Djemba Djemba, Paul Rachubka, Russell Beardsmore, Lee Martin, Danny Webber, Mikael Silvestre, Quinton Fortune, Dimitar Berbatov, Erik Nevland, and Dion Dublin, with Teddy Sheringham leading as captain.

For the Liverpool Reds, manager David James leads players Emile Heskey, Glen Johnson, John Arne Riise, Patrik Berger, Vladimir Smicer, Steve McManaman, Jason McAteer, Florent Sinama, John Durnin, David Thompson, Jermaine Pennant, Djibril Cisse, and Phil Babb, with Luis Garcia as captain.

At the same time, United legend Sheringham said the tough times at United have been prevalent, but this season is among the worst.

“It’s a tough period for Manchester United, even more so this season.

“But we are in a Cup final, but it’s a shame we’re playing against Manchester City because they are a well-oiled machine at the moment, and have been for the last few years.

“Things need to change for Manchester United to become the No. 1 dogs in Manchester, but it’s a long road,” said Sheringham.

Meanwhile, executive project director of Battle of the Reds, Azman Fami, said the ticket sales have reached 25,000 for the match on Saturday.

He added that the organisers, AllStar Sports, are expecting at least 30,000 fans in attendance at the National Stadium to watch the Liverpool Reds take on the Manchester Reds.

Azman also said the pitch of the stadium has been deemed fit to play by the Stadium Board.
